Do we spot and capture opportunities along the way?

In today’s fast-paced world, opportunity waits for no one. Yet too often, brilliant ideas are missed or dismissed because teams aren’t equipped or confident to act. This isn’t about luck - it’s about building the skills, confidence, and environment to see and seize opportunities when they appear.

As Simon Sinek says: “If you have the opportunity to do amazing things in your life, I strongly encourage you to invite someone to join you.” Opportunity is a team sport, and the best teams share, develop, and act on ideas collectively.

Here are 5 ways your team can get better at spotting and capturing opportunities:

1️⃣ Celebrate Risk-taking. Bravery matters. Recognise and reward calculated risks - even if they don’t succeed - to foster a culture of initiative.

2️⃣ Debrief and learn. Regularly review missed opportunities to understand why they were overlooked and how to prevent this in the future.

3️⃣ Use team time wisely. Dedicate regular discussions to identifying new opportunities and planning how to act on them. Collaboration fuels creativity.

4️⃣ Measure psychological safety. When people feel safe to speak up, they’re more likely to share innovative ideas or flag emerging opportunities. You could measure this by running anonymous surveys or using tools like team health check-ins to assess how comfortable people feel sharing their thoughts.

5️⃣ Engage outwardly. Send team members to strategic forums or external events, encouraging them to bring fresh perspectives back to the team.

At Gyre, we believe that capturing opportunities isn’t just for the bold few - it’s a skill that every team can develop with the right mindset and tools.

What’s one opportunity your team has captured recently, and how did you make it happen?
